From Sacramento to the World – Celebrating CLTs and Advancing Our Movement

May 16 – World CLT Day – is a powerful reminder of the strength, solidarity, and spirit that drive the community land trust movement—both here in California and around the world.

Yesterday the San Francisco Community Land Trust (SFCLT) joined fellow advocates from across the state at the California Capitol to uplift and educate lawmakers about the urgent need for policies that support community ownership. We met with legislators to advocate for key bills that will help grow the CLT model statewide—expanding tenant protections, increasing funding for preservation, and making it easier for organizations like ours to acquire and steward housing that keeps people rooted.

We were deeply honored to be recognized on the floor of the California Senate, alongside our CLT peers, for our work advancing equitable, people-powered housing solutions. It was a moment we won’t forget—and a powerful signal that Sacramento is listening.

A special shoutout goes to our incredible colleague Junli Dai, who has been a pillar of SFCLT for over 12 years. Her unwavering dedication and leadership have helped sustain our mission and expand our impact. This recognition is also a celebration of her service and the values she brings to our team and the movement.

Then, on May 16, we joined CLTs across the globe in celebrating World CLT Day—a day to recognize the transformative power of community ownership and the people who make it possible. From virtual events to local celebrations, we shared stories, resources, and reflections on how CLTs are making housing more just, stable, and community-led. Check out this message from Senator Bernie Sanders to the Global Community Land Trust Movement!

Here’s to people-powered housing, policy that supports it, and the amazing community—locally and globally—that keeps this movement growing. 🏘️💥
