| Columbus United Cooperative is Up and Running |
| September was a momentous month for the residents at Columbus United Cooperative and for SFCLT. During September all of the legal documents for the cooperative were approved by the City of San Francisco and the State Department of Real Estate. This means that after thirteen years, the residents have successfully completed their goal of forming a resident owned permanently affordable housing cooperative. The cooperative signed their master lease with SFCLT and sold 20 shares in the cooperative to the residents of the building. We celebrated this historic occasion with a fabulous party on September 22nd. Right away in October, the cooperative began collecting monthly carrying charges from the residents, and paying their monthly expenses with the help of our fabulous property mangers at Chinatown Community Development Center. The residents are busy forming committees and planning for their Annual Meeting and Board elections in January. Here at SFCLT we applaud all the hard work of the Columbus United Co-op Board members and residents who have realized their dream of protecting their building forever as affordable housing, owned and operated by the residents! Stay tuned for more updates about Columbus United Cooperative and SFCLT's work with other residents and community groups across San Francisco working to convert their buildings into permanently affordable housing cooperatives with the CLT! |
| Please support SFCLT |
Please consider making an end of the year donation to SFCLT to help us continue and expand our work to create more permanently affordable, resident controlled housing in San Francisco through community ownership of the land. When asked what she likes about housing co-ops, the Columbus United Co-op Vice President, Mrs. Miao Yan Wen recently said, "Right now, I feel stable and safe. We have better control of the building and all the related bills so we can better manage the building...Being a co-op member I have gotten to meet so many people I would have not met otherwise. I feel I have better relationships with people and also like how working together with more people we have more creative ideas to make our building better." Grassroots support is crucial to our organization and an important part of our mission. Your support will enable us to create more resident-owned and governed housing cooperatives for low-income communities in San Francisco and help us improve and expand our co-op training program. As a small organization, every dollar counts towards helping us reach our goals! Please go now to www.sfclt.org and make a generous donation to invest in real change in San Francisco! |
