Introducing the SFCLT Organizational Director: Fred Lambright

Fred Lambright

Fred Lambright is the new Organizational Director of the San Francisco Community Land Trust, a membership-based organization whose mission is to create permanently affordable, resident-controlled housing for low- to moderate-income people in San Francisco through community ownership of the land. Fred recognizes the strength of the organization and how the limited equity/co-op housing model empowers low- to moderate income households through the union of residents, communities and local government.

Fred has been in affordable housing for over 15 years. During this time he worked with housing developers across Arizona, California and Nevada in the creation of a range of housing types that include single family, multi-family, SRO units and homeless shelters. His work also included assisting Native American tribes in the development of housing on tribal trust lands and has chaired a committee under the Executive Order of President Clinton to streamline the mortgage process on tribal trust land. Fred is a graduate of the University of San Francisco where he holds a B.S. in Applied Economics.

Welcome Fred!

Member Film Screening: Land of Opportunity 11/16/10

Land of Opportunity

At SFCLT we love movies! And we especially love movies that educate and inspire us to action. So we were excited to learn about the recently completed documentary, "Land of Opportunity". We will be hosting a screening of the film on Tuesday November 16th at 7:00pm at our favorite local bookstore and community partner, Modern Times Bookstore.

The film's website describes the project...

"The recent tragedies in Pakistan and Haiti and the unprecedented catastrophe of the BP oil spill in the Gulf Coast reveal that the lessons of post-Katrina New Orleans have only become more relevant over time. Land of Opportunity, a verité character- driven documentary and multi-platform video project, interweaves the stories of a diverse group of people as they struggle to rebuild their lives in post-Katrina New Orleans.

From the urban planner to the immigrant worker to the public housing resident, our protagonists hail from different walks of life but share a stake in the rebirth of this beloved city. With no expert commentary or talking heads, this is an intimate and ground-level view of a situation that has been widely discussed but rarely seen with great texture and complexity. As these compelling people navigate the rocky terrain of the rebuilding process, we realize that their story is the story of cities and towns across this country struggling to rebuild and reinvent themselves after disaster, whether it’s economic, natural or man-made."

Come join us to view this important film and discuss how we at SFCLT are working to fight the gentrification and displacement of our own city of San Francisco through the Community Land Trust and Cooperative Housing model.

Tuesday November 16th

7-9pm

The event is free and open to the public (but we will be passing the hat to support SFCLT)

Wheelchair accessible

Community Collaborations: Building with neighborhood groups

SFCLT works in partnership with community based organizations who are fighting on the front lines in neighborhoods to preserve communities of low and moderate income San Franciscans. Our model is one of community self determination and preservation. SFCLT's theory of change is that low-income communities can be strengthened by stabilizing housing, building economic security and financial assets, and increasing civic engagement to ensure that policies and resources benefit their neighborhoods. As each neighborhood has specific needs, it is our organization's practice to always partner and collaborate with community based organizations in the neighborhoods where we are working.

Our first project, the Columbus United Cooperative, is a collaboration with Chinatown Community Development Corporation, Asian Law Caucus (ALC), Asian Neighborhood Design, and the resident association. Resident participation is core to the Land Trust’s home ownership model; they are involved throughout the process, from unit design to creating the legal documents necessary to form the coop. This ensures that the final outcome suits their specific needs, including income levels, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, health, age and disabilities. Our relationships with Asian Law Caucus and Chinatown CDC are crucial to the success of this project. We work closely with attorneys and organizers from both organizations, as these individuals have years of experience in the Chinatown Community.

In July 2010, SFCLT began a project to analyze the feasibility of developing a community land trust project in the South of Market (SOMA) neighborhood to be funded through the SOMA Community Stabilization Fund. We are partnering with the Filipino American Development Fund and Asian Neighborhood Design to reach out to stakeholders, community activists, and tenants in SOMA to introduce them to the SFCLT’s model of permanently affordable housing through cooperative homeownership. We are also be working closely wiith the South of Market Community Action Network, which has years of experience in fighting for neighborhood preservation in the SOMA. Through these community-based connections, we will work to identify buildings occupied by low-income tenants who would be interested in working with the SFCLT to convert their buildings to resident-controlled cooperatives. Once we identify a feasible project, we will work to secure financing for the acqusition and development of the project.
