San Francisco Community Land Trust was proud to celebrate the Grand Opening of Columbus United Cooperative San Francisco’s first Community Land Trust/Limited-Equity Housing Coop on June 16th, 2009

This limited-equity housing coop is an important success story in a neighborhood where few residents are able to own a home.

In 2005, the San Francisco Community Land Trust was approached about working with the tenants of the building, who were fighting to save their homes from demolition. With the help of the Asian Law Caucus and Chinatown Community Development Center, the tenants organized to fight the eviction. Through an extensive process of community collaboration, the Land Trust secured public and private financing to purchase the building and has worked with the residents and community partners to rehabilitate and convert the building into a resident-controlled, limited-equity housing cooperative – an alternative form of homeownership in which the Land Trust owns the land while the residents own shares in the residential cooperative. The rehabilitation of this historic building is now complete, with the Asian Law Caucus owning their commercial space, SFCLT occupying office space below, and 21 households making their homes in the apartments above.
